WTF?! HE'S A SNAKE!
Yes, that's the animal he's cursed with, but not the year he was born in. He isn't infact born in the year of the Snake when you compare dates given to us in the anime series.

FACT NO. 1
Tooru is born in the year of the dog. In profiles, and probably art books, we are told Tohru is sixteen years old, this can also be backed by what year she is in highschool. In the first episode we discover Tohru is the year of the dog, when she runs into Shigure, and he comments on how compatible they would be. Now, if we say Tohru was born in '82 (and this was '98), she would be sixteen and in the year of the dog. This is really our only solid evidence to figuring out characters actual years.

FACT NO. 2
Ayame is twenty-six. We know for certain, Ayame, Hatori and Shigure are well out of school, highschool and university which would make quite a large gap between them and the next oldest set of Jyuuinishi. So it makes quite some sense when we read in profiles that Ayame is twenty-six, that gives him eighteen years about the attend highschool and another eight years to attend university and set up his shop.

FACT NO. 3
Ayame is ten years older than Tohru. Now we have Tohru born in '82, and Ayame who is born ten years earlier in '72. If Tohru was born in '82, the year of the dog, then Ayame born in '72 is the rat. Therefore, my theory is complete!

ANIMAL SPIRIT
Snake. Diplomatic and popular, the Snake has the sensual art of seduction down. PERSONALITY
Some might say he's a tad bit eccentric, especially for his age because he acts like a sixteen year old girl who overdosed on pixie sticks and jolt. He is extremely open and sometimes a bit too blunt and overbearing in some private moments that should have been left to run their course. Full of fun surprises and endless flirting, Ayame is a complete 180 from his younger, more humble and reserved brother, Souma Yuki.

While a bit outrageous and melodramatic at times, he also can be very serious. his intelligence is much higher than most would give him credit for, making valid claims about teenagers and sex, before he bursts outright into his usual eccentric nut bar self, screwing over his argument completely. he acknowledges differences in his personality to others, and admires them for having the qualities which he lacks. He even goes as far as to listen to no one else but Souma Hatori because he respects him so much, wishing to be the best of friends.

I believe, he feels similar towards his brother Yuki, but just continues regardless of what Yuki says, because it is so much fun to see his younger, calmer brother, break out in anger. He also sees Yuki's anger, in contrast to his usual placid state, as a good sign, for even though he is yelling at him, at least he is feeling some emotion, rather than distain, or nothingness, unlike how he used to regard Yuki. He now, in later years, regrets how he treated Yuki, and wishes to bridge the gap that separates them - whether or not Yuki desires it as well.

INTERESTING TIDBITS
He owns a shop that tailors women's clothing for men as well as women. He admits that every man has a secret garden and goals, disregarding that some of their goals could be sough in normal society as crimes as well. (Ie, peeping into a woman's room while she is changing or bathing).

WHY I LOVE HIM
The better question really is, if you don't love him, why not? Gawd, just watch that clip when he's in highschool and Hatori tells him to come along, and he bounces along like a little kid. So cute. Or better yet, watch the speech he gives in highschool to the adults when one of the kids is caught in the Red Light District. Nobody could do it like Ayame can.
